Installation

Boomerang for Outlook will work with any Outlook.com or Office365 account. Right now, the add-in is supported in Chrome, Firefox, IE 10+, Edge, and Safari. On your desktop, you will also be able to access Boomerang in Outlook 2016 and Outlook 2013 on PC.

You can download the add-in here on the Office store then just visit Outlook on the Web to get started. After downloading, if you don’t see the add-in appear in your Outlook, please make sure to enable Boomerang in your add-ins settings.

You'll be able to use Boomerang for Outlook with all Outlook.com or Office365 accounts. You'll need to add it for each account you'd like to use it on, and once you do it will be available on every computer and browser you're using.

Boomerang will currently work on the web interface, Outlook 2016 for PC, and Outlook 2013 for PC. If you are using any of those platforms you will be able to use Boomerang as soon as it has been added to your account.

No, you'll only need to add it once for each email account you'd like to use it on, and after you install the add-in, it will be available on every computer and browser you're using.
For desktop versions of Outlook, you’ll be able to access Boomerang from the ribbon while viewing any message. Click "Open Boomerang" to use Boomerang while reading a message. When composing a message, you’ll be able to access Boomerang from the ribbon as well, with even more options (including Send Later, Boomerang, Suggest Times, Share Availability, and more).

If you are using Outlook.com (including live.com and Hotmail email accounts), Boomerang will automatically be loaded if you are on the newest Outlook.com platform. When you’re reading a message, you will be able to access Boomerang features by clicking the Boomerang icon in the upper right corner of a message, to the left of the Reply button.

When you’re writing a message, you’ll be able to access Boomerang by clicking on the Boomerang icon below your message. If you’re using the new Outlook.com beta UI, you’ll need to click on the small gray arrow below your compose window, and locate Boomerang below the add-ins section.

When you’re reading a message, you will be able to access Boomerang features by clicking the Boomerang icon in the upper right corner of a message, to the left of the Reply button.

When you’re writing a message, you’ll be able to access Boomerang by clicking on the Boomerang icon below your message.

Boomerang

When you have a message open in the web interface, you'll see Boomerang listed as an option directly above the body of the message you're viewing. Click 'Boomerang' and you'll be able to select the exact time you would like the message to return.

Boomerang from this view is currently only available when you are accessing your account through the web portal. We will have this option available soon for users on Outlook 2016 and Outlook 2013 on PC.

When you use Boomerang, you'll have a dedicated manage page that will show you all of your pending messages. To get there, compose a new message, click Add-Ins, then click Boomerang. Once Boomerang opens, click the Manage link at the bottom of the app add-ins panel and you'll be directed to your pending messages.

  • You can reschedule or cancel any pending messages through your manage page. To get there, compose a new message, click Add-Ins, then click Boomerang. Once Boomerang opens, click the Manage link in the bottom right corner.
  • You will see a section called Messsages to Boomerang. You will find all messages scheduled to Boomerang in that section.
  • When you hover over the message you want to reschedule or cancel, you'll see options available to view, reschedule, cancel, or return now.

Compose a new message, click Add-Ins, then click Boomerang. Once Boomerang opens, click on Settings in the bottom right corner to gain access to your settings and select how you'd like your messages to return.

Follow Up Reminders

You can use follow up reminders on any message you are sending out and want to keep track if you've received a response. If your recipient doesn't respond by the date you've indicated, we'll bring the message back to your inbox so you don't forget to follow up with them.

You can reschedule any of your reminders through your manage page. To get there, compose a new message, click Add-Ins, then click Boomerang. Once Boomerang opens, clickclick the Manage link at the bottom of the app add-ins panel and you'll be directed to your pending messages.

When you hover over the message, you'll see options available to view, reschedule, cancel, or return now.

Send Later

You can designate any new message or reply to send at a time of your choosing. When you have a compose window open, click on the Add-ins button from the top bar and then select Boomerang. Depending on your account type, you may see a Boomerang icon in your top bar that you can click for quick access to the features. Once you have finished writing the message you would like to send later, click the Send Later button and choose a time. Your message will automatically be sent at the scheduled time, even if you're not online at that time!

No, you do not need to have your computer on or browser open at the scheduled time. The message will be sent regardless at the scheduled time.

All of your pending messages can be viewed in your manage page. To get there, compose a new message, click Add-Ins, then click Boomerang. Once the Boomerang panel opens, click the Manage link at the bottom right of the panel.

You can always view your Sent folder to double check if messages were delivered. If you see the message listed there, you can be sure it was delivered.

If you need to make any adjustments to your messages, including editing the content or changing when you'd like it to send, you'll see these options in your manage page.

When you click edit, the message will open as a draft. Feel free to make your changes and then close the page. We will make sure all your changes get saved.

Recurring Messages

With recurring messages, you can designate a message (or a reply) to be sent at a regular interval.

When you have a compose window open, click on the Add-ins button from the top bar and then select Boomerang. Depending on your account type, you may see a Boomerang icon in your top bar that you can click for quick access to the features.

Once you have finished writing your message, click the Send Later button, then look for the "schedule recurring message" button and choose the start date, frequency, day of the week to send, and the end date.

Open your Boomerang for Outlook manage page by click on the manage button at the bottom of the Boomerang taskpane. From there, select the Recurring Messages tab (you can also access it directly, here). You will see a list of the messages you have scheduled to be sent on a recurring basis.

You can use the buttons next to each message to reschedule or change the message parameters, and the changes will be saved immediately. You can also choose to skip just the next message rather than canceling the message.

To reschedule a message click "Reschedule" and choose a new time.

To edit message contents or recipient list, click "Edit." You’ll be taken to your original message in a Compose window. Make any changes you’d like, and your draft will autosave.

Please make sure to close the window instead of pressing Send. If you click Send instead of closing the email, your message will send immediately, and every future attempt to send this recurring message will fail.

Read Receipts

A read receipt is a way for the sender of an email to request notification when a message has been read.

Boomerang's read receipt feature offers valuable open and click tracking data while at the same time respecting the privacy of the recipient. Boomerang gives you access to the approximate time an email was opened, how many times it’s been open, and how many times any of the links included in the email have been clicked.

Boomerang's read receipts use different technology than the read receipts built into Outlook, which provides three advantages:

  1. Boomerang's read receipts are cross-platform, so they will work when you send emails to users who are not on your domain. They work even if the recipient of your email is on another email system, such as Yahoo or Gmail. They also work if the recipient opens your email on a mobile device.
  2. Boomerang provides click tracking, which gives you information about whether or not the recipient of your email has read what you sent them.
  3. Boomerang's read receipts integrate with Boomerang reminders so you can get a reminder if your email doesn't get opened. That way, you don't have to remember to follow up!

When the 'Request read receipt and track clicks' button is clicked, Boomerang will insert an image into the footer of an email, just below the signature line. This image notifies the reader that the sender has requested a read receipt and provides a link to opt-out. When your email gets opened, the recipient's email client loads the image, which tells Boomerang's servers that the message has been opened.

Boomerang read receipts are generally reliable, but we don't recommend that you rely on them as a guarantee. Read receipts are an indication that the email was likely read. Generally they work across different email clients and systems, but occasionally you may not receive a notification even if an email was read. And with our opt-out feature, the recipient may choose not to send the receipt.

It's not currently possible to tell which specific recipients have opened the email or clicked links. If you need to know which recipient opened your email or clicked the links, we recommend sending separate emails to each recipient.

Read receipts are different from traditional click and open tracking in that a recipient can opt-out of providing the data to the sender. Many other services use a covert form of tracking that involves inserting a 1X1 pixel image into the body of the email. When images are displayed, the sender receives a bunch of information, such as IP address, time of open, type of device the message was opened with, as well as the physical location of the reader. We think this is all a bit creeptastic!

We have done our best to implement a solution that respects the privacy of the reader while at the same time offering valuable information to the sender.

None. If you choose not to provide a receipt, we respect your privacy, and no data is provided to the sender. To them it just looks like you never opened the message.

From a Compose or Reply window, click the Boomerang icon below the message area, and select "Read Receipt," or open the Boomerang task pane and select "Request read receipt and track clicks." We'll do the rest!

Click the 'Manage' link on the Boomerang menu, then click the 'Tracked Messages' tab (or access it directly, here). Next to each message, you'll see icons indicating whether they've been read or clicked. As you hover over each one, you can click on "Details" to get more information about a specific message.

Respondable

You can think of Respondable as a personal email-writing assistant. It lives in the lower right corner of your compose window and gives you a meter that reflects how likely it is you'll get a response based on a number of different factors. Based on our research, we have discovered certain writing characteristics that have a significant impact on whether or not you get a response. The most significant factors are the ones you see featured. We wrote a swanky blog post about our research that you can take a look at here.

If you click on the meter, it will open up with details about the email you're currently working on and will adjust as you continue typing. With the help of Respondable, you'll be well on your way to writing the perfect email!

Respondable is included as part of Boomerang for Outlook. It is available for all Boomerang users - just open the Boomerang taskpane, and click on the Respondable button at the bottom. This will open the detailed Respondable view, where you'll be able to access in depth recommendations for the email you're writing, in real-time.

No. By default, Boomerang Respondable works entirely within your browser. It does not transmit any message data anywhere, for any purpose.

If you choose to enable advanced machine learning features, Boomerang transmits message data using enterprise-grade encryption, analyzes the message data on a secure server, then transmits the analysis back via encrypted communication channels. After performing the analysis, Boomerang's servers immediately discard any personally-identifiable information connected with the analysis. Boomerang employees do not have access to any message data transmitted as part of your use of Respondable.

Respondable is free to use for all users on as many messages as you'd like. Advanced features, including positivity, politeness, and subjectivity are available for users on Boomerang for Outlook's Pro plan. Because these advanced features require several layers of machine learning, all calculated in real-time, they are more expensive for us to provide. You can find out which plan you are currently subscribed to by visiting the Boomerang Manage page. To upgrade to a Pro plan, click here.

You've discovered one of the limitations of artificial intelligence in its current form. In any individual email, the machine learning can arrive at answers that do not make sense. In those cases, trust your judgment rather than the calculation.

Politeness, positivity, and subjectivity rely on machine learning techniques that compare your writing to other samples of text that were used as training data. Because there's no "objective" set of data that can translate how positive, polite, or subjective a set of words is, the machine learning techniques look for similarities between your writing and writing samples that come with an approximate numerical score for positivity, politeness, or subjectivity. One common source of positivity training data is movie reviews - words that appear in reviews for poorly-rated movies tend to be more negative!

We recommend treating the calculations as a general guidepost rather than a source of absolute truth. They will usually make sense, but not always.

Suggest Times

Whenever you're replying or composing a new message, you can access our calendar features by clicking Add-Ins in the top bar, then selecting Boomerang. On the right side, click Suggest Times.

This will bring up a new window for you where you can view your calendar. Click the calendar image with times that work for you and once you hit 'Insert into Email' we'll take care of the rest.

If you're having trouble getting the scheduling window to show, please make sure you have pop-ups allowed for your browser.

Compose a new message, click Add-Ins, then click Boomerang. Once Boomerang opens, click on Settings in the bottom right corner to gain access to your settings. Make sure you select Calendar Settings on the left side of your page and you'll see all calendar related settings options.

Share Availability

Whenever you're replying or composing a new message, you can access our calendar features by clicking Add-Ins in the top bar, then selecting Boomerang. On the right side, click Share Availability.

From the menu that pops down, select the options you'd like to share with your recipients and once you're ready, select 'Insert into Email'.

Inbox Pause

Boomerang added a feature called Inbox Pause to the Boomerang for Outlook add-in. It lets you temporarily stop the constant interruption of email notifications so you can focus on what needs to get done.

Inbox Pause’s magic knows no bounds, at least when it comes to devices. If you pause your Inbox on desktop, it will pause your Inbox (and notifications) across ALL your devices until you unpause!

Every time you pause your Inbox, an email will appear at the top of your Inbox that reminds you Inbox Pause is active. This message will include a link that, when clicked on any device, will unpause your Inbox. You’ll always be able to unpause your Inbox, even when you’re not able to access Boomerang for Outlook!

No. The emails still go directly to your Outlook, they’re just hidden from view inside a special folder we create. None of the emails you receive when your Inbox is paused are stored by Boomerang.

Inbox Pause harnesses the magic of Outlook rules and folders to temporarily divert messages from your Inbox into a folder until you unpause.

Here’s what’s happening behind the scenes whenever you click "pause":

  • Inbox Pause creates a folder (e.g., "Inbox-Paused-2018-Jan-01")
  • Inbox Pause uses this folder to create a rule. This rule will automatically make all your emails skip your Inbox (except for those you have whitelisted using delivery exceptions, if applicable.) This rule will have a similar name to the folder Inbox Pause created (e.g., "Inbox-Paused-2018-Jan-01")
  • If you have the auto-responder enabled, Inbox Pause will also turn on automatic replies accordingly.

And that's it! When you click unpause, Boomerang moves all diverted emails from the folder back to your Inbox. It also gets rid of the rule that hid your incoming messages, and if applicable, turns off automatic replies.

Boomerang needs access to these permissions in order to temporarily hide messages from your Inbox. (More specifically, Inbox Pause relies, in part, on creating rules and folders, which requires additional permissions.)

No, they will work in tandem. Any pre-existing rules you have will be triggered before Inbox Pause’s rule gets applied.

Yep! Inbox Pause does not affect outgoing email, so you can write and send email as usual.

Your send later emails will send as scheduled. Boomeranged emails will come back to your Inbox as scheduled but they will not be brought to the top of your Inbox until your Inbox is unpaused.

You will always be able to use Outlook’s search functionality to find your messages. Additionally, though we don’t recommend making a habit of it, you can peek inside the Inbox Pause folder that is created when you pause your Inbox to see all the emails that have skipped your Inbox. (If you are using a web version of Outlook, you may need to refresh your browser after pausing before you can see the folder.)

Don't worry, you can always unpause your Inbox by following these steps:

  1. Turn off automatic replies

If you enabled the auto-responder when you paused your Inbox, you will want to navigiate to the automatic replies section of your Outlook settings and turn automatic replies off. (Outlook.com/Outlook on the Web, Outlook 2013/2016)

  2. Delete the rules used by Inbox Pause to hide emails from your Inbox

Navigate to the rules section of your Outlook (Outlook.com, Outlook on the Web, Outlook 2013/2016)

Delete the rule(s) that have a name resembling "Inbox-Paused-yyyy-mmm-dd."

  3. Move paused messages back to your Inbox

The last step is to return the messages Inbox Pause hid back to your Inbox. These messages will be located in a folder with a name resembling "Inbox-Paused-yyyy-mmm-dd".

Open this folder, select all messages, and move them back to your Inbox. Then delete the folder.

The above steps should successfully unpause your Inbox. If you have any trouble, please contact us at support+outlook@baydin.com

You can use the delivery exceptions feature to allow emails from certain senders, domains or emails with certain keywords to arrive in your Inbox instantly even when it is paused.

It is not free to run the servers that power Inbox Pause. Building and maintaining features like Inbox Pause also require investment. So we ask that you support us by helping us let people know about these features.

If you really need to remove the signature, you can go into the Outlook automatic replies settings and change the vacation auto-responder text manually.
